Bangor, Maine
Bangor
Give Bangor one night as a base for the Maine Highlands, or two if you want the Stephen King stops and a Penobscot River day. Not a destination on its own.
Bangor is a small city of about 33,000 and the service centre for central, eastern and northern Maine, so it works as a bed and a supply stop rather than a sightseeing target. Downtown and the waterfront are walkable in an afternoon; anything outside that needs a car. Most travellers use it for one night before Acadia, Baxter State Park or the north woods, and the airport is the reason many of them are here at all.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter driving: ice and snow on I-95 and Route 2 from November to April.
- Stephen King's house is a private home on a residential street — look from the pavement, do not knock or park across driveways.
- Cell coverage thins fast once you leave the I-95 corridor toward Baxter State Park and the north woods.
- Black flies and mosquitoes peak in late May and June; bring repellent for anything on water.
Bangor is a low-crime small city and downtown is fine at night; the real hazards are winter roads, black ice on pavements and long unlit stretches of highway outside town.
