Where to go
Treat October as a city month rather than a beach month. Bangkok itself works well: the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun and the National Museum are all close together and easy to combine with a river boat, and the covered markets at Chatuchak and Or Tor Kor stay usable in a downpour. Jim Thompson House, the art galleries around Charoen Krung and the city's malls are the standard wet-afternoon options.
If you want a day out of the city, Ayutthaya and Kanchanaburi are reachable by train or road, but check river levels and road conditions after heavy rain. For beaches, this is the wrong month on the Andaman side: Phuket, Krabi and the Similan and Surin parks are in the tail of the monsoon, with rough seas and closures. The Gulf islands, such as Ko Samet and Ko Tao, are the better coastal choice early in October, though their own wet season begins late in the month.
If dry, reliable sightseeing matters more than price, move the trip to November, when the cool season starts and the rain largely stops.
