Bangkok in June: what to expect

June sits in Bangkok's rainy season. Mornings are usually hot and humid, the sky builds through midday, and rain tends to arrive in one or two heavy bursts in the afternoon or evening rather than as all-day drizzle. Between showers the city dries fast, though low-lying streets and some sois can hold water after a downpour.

Expect roughly 33 °C by day and 26 °C at night, with high humidity that makes walking feel hotter than the number suggests. Sun hours drop compared with the cool season, and rain-day counts climb through the month. Treat the figures below as planning bands, not forecasts, and check a Thai Meteorological Department forecast in the days before you fly.

June is low season in Bangkok. Hotels, hostels and serviced apartments sit in their cheapest band of the year, and you can usually book later than in the cool season without losing the room you want. Flights into Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) are also cheaper outside holiday weekends.

The trade-off is weather-dependent sightseeing: fewer queues at the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, easier tables at popular restaurants, and shorter waits for the Chao Phraya boats, but a higher chance that a temple-and-river day gets cut short. If you are flexible about which day you do what, low season in Bangkok is good value.

The main fixed point is Visakha Bucha, which falls on the full moon of the sixth lunar month — late May or June depending on the year. It is a Buddhist holiday and alcohol sales are banned nationwide for the day. Check the exact 2026 date before you plan around it.

Beyond that, June is a quiet month for festivals in Bangkok. Royal and memorial days that close government offices fall in July, August, October and December, not June. Rainy-season programming fills the gap: museum shows, gallery openings, food events and mall promotions are the usual indoor draw.

Build June days around a wet-afternoon plan. Do outdoor sights early: the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun are best at opening, before the heat and the clouds build. Keep a museum, a mall or a spa as your fallback for 15:00–18:00, then go out again for dinner when the rain passes.

For a beach add-on, look at the Gulf side rather than the Andaman. Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao stay mostly dry and calm through June, while Phuket, Krabi and the Andaman coast are in southwest monsoon: rough seas, red-flag swimming and the Similan and Surin marine parks closed. If you want islands in June, book the Gulf.

Pack for heat, humidity and sudden water. Light, quick-drying clothes beat cotton that stays damp; a compact umbrella or a light rain shell lives in your day bag. Footwear that survives a flooded pavement — sandals or trainers you do not mind soaking — is more useful than anything smart.

Add a dry bag or zip pouches for phone and passport, a refillable water bottle, and mosquito repellent for evenings. If your June dates land on Visakha Bucha, note that alcohol sales are suspended for the day, so buy anything you want the day before.

May is hotter and drier at the start, with the rains arriving late in the month; the Andaman already turns rough. July keeps the same pattern as June but Western summer holidays lift prices on the Gulf islands. August is similar again, with Samui, Phangan and Tao the dry choice.

If you can move your trip, the easy window is November to February: cool, dry and the busiest, most expensive stretch. April is the hottest month and hosts Songkran, when transport out of Bangkok sells out.
