Is it worth it
Kanchanaburi is 2.5–3 hours west of Bangkok by road and 3–4 hours by train, so a day trip costs 5–6 hours in transit. What you get in return is the bridge over the River Kwai, the Thailand–Burma Railway story and two war cemeteries, all within a short walk or ride of each other. That is a full day, and it is a good one.
What a day trip cannot do is Erawan National Park, the seven-tier waterfall about 1.5 hours further west, or the Hellfire Pass section of the railway. Both need a night in Kanchanaburi. If those are the reason you are going, book two nights and treat the day trip as a taster.
Skip the day trip if you are in Bangkok for only two or three nights, or if you would rather spend the day on the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. Ayutthaya is the shorter day trip from Bangkok, roughly 1–2 hours each way.
Getting there
Three options: train, minivan or bus, and a private car or tour. The train is the slowest and the most interesting, because the last stretch runs on the railway itself. Trains leave from Thonburi station on the west bank of the Chao Phraya, not from Hua Lamphong or Krung Thep Aphiwat, so allow time to cross the river.
Minivans from Mo Chit and buses from the southern bus terminal are faster and run more often. A private car or a small-group tour costs more but removes the timetable problem and can add the bridge and cemeteries in one loop.
Once in Kanchanaburi town, songthaews and motorbike taxis cover the bridge, the war cemetery and the JEATH War Museum. Distances are short; a bicycle also works.
