Bandiagara
Two nights: one to arrive and arrange a guide, one to start a Dogon Country trek. A day-trip from Mopti is rushed but possible.
Bandiagara is the gateway to the Dogon Country and the UNESCO-listed Bandiagara Escarpment. The town itself has few sights, but it is the practical base for stocking supplies, finding a guide, and starting a multi-day trek into the escarpment villages. Most travellers spend one night here before heading into Dogon Country.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Scams and watch-outs
- Supplies and guide fees are noticeably more expensive here than in Mopti or Sévaré.
- The security situation in central Mali is volatile: check your government's travel advice before planning a trip.
- No ATMs in Bandiagara; bring enough CFA francs from Mopti or Bamako.
Mali is under a military-led transition and parts of the country are affected by armed group activity. Bandiagara is in a relatively stable area, but travel advice from your government should be checked before any trip. Petty crime is rare but keep valuables out of sight.
