Bandar Seri Begawan
Bandar Seri Begawan is a morning-and-evening city: do the mosque and the museum before the heat and outside Friday prayers, rest indoors at midday, eat at the Gadong night market after dark — and bring no alcohol plans.
The sights are few and spread over a few kilometres, the pavements are thin, the sun is strong and the rules are stricter than in neighbouring countries. Four clusters cover a first visit; a taxi joins them, and Friday midday is a hard stop.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Mosques: Shoulders and knees covered; women cover their hair (a robe and scarf are usually lent free at the door); shoes off; no photos of people praying.
- Dress generally: More conservative than neighbouring Malaysia or Singapore: cover shoulders and knees in public, and dress modestly even at hotel pools.
- Alcohol: Not sold anywhere and illegal to drink in public; do not ask restaurant staff to bring your own.
- Ramadan: Eat, drink and smoke discreetly out of public view during daylight hours if you are visiting during the fasting month.
- Greetings: A light handshake is common between men; wait for a woman to offer her hand first, and some may prefer a nod instead.
- The Sultan and royal family: Public criticism of the Sultan or the royal family is a serious offence in Brunei; avoid the topic entirely in conversation and online posts.
- Photos: Ask before photographing people up close; never photograph the palace grounds, security checkpoints or military sites.

Scams and watch-outs
