The honest verdict
The sights are few and spread over a few kilometres, the pavements are thin, the sun is strong and the rules are stricter than in neighbouring countries. Four clusters cover a first visit; a taxi joins them, and Friday midday is a hard stop.

Three mistakes to avoid
- Overpricing is a smaller risk here than in neighbouring countries, but street taxis (already scarce) may quote a round number to a visitor: ask your hotel for the going rate before you ride, or use a ride-hailing app if available.(Scams)

- Shoulders and knees covered; women cover their hair (a robe and scarf are usually lent free at the door); shoes off; no photos of people praying.

- More conservative than neighbouring Malaysia or Singapore: cover shoulders and knees in public, and dress modestly even at hotel pools.
- Alcohol
- Not sold anywhere and illegal to drink in public; do not ask restaurant staff to bring your own.
