Before you start
Welcome to the Waterfront, Regalia museum & Kampong Ayer jetties audio walk in Bandar Seri Begawan. 3 stops: Royal Regalia Museum, Kampong Ayer and Brunei Museum. Morning cluster: the Royal Regalia museum at opening, then a water taxi across to Kampong Ayer; flat, breezy, shade from buildings.
The river promenade, the museum and the water-taxi jetties (approximate box). Underfoot: promenade and boardwalks; slope: flat; shade: medium.
Bandar Seri Begawan is a small, calm capital built around a river and an absolute monarchy: a stilt village older than most European capitals, two golden-domed mosques built six centuries apart in spirit if not in fact, and an economy funded almost entirely by oil and gas discovered a hundred years ago.
Before you start: Water taxis: agree the fare before boarding and wear the life jacket. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. Royal Regalia Museum
Muzium Regalia Diraja
Stop 1 of 3: Royal Regalia Museum. Locally, Muzium Regalia Diraja.
Go at opening on a weekday; allow 60 minutes; it is air-conditioned, so it works as a heat stop; check that it is open before you ride.
No photography inside the galleries unless signs say otherwise. School groups on weekday mornings. Bags may be checked at the door. Shoes may be left at the door; follow staff signs.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Kampong Ayer. It's about 5 minutes on foot. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
2. Kampong Ayer
Stop 2 of 3: Kampong Ayer. Arrival point: Water-taxi jetty near the town centre or the Yayasan Complex.
Go by water taxi from the town-centre jetty, 45–90 minutes: agree the fare and the route (loop or one-way) before you board, and wear the life jacket provided.
Kampong Ayer is not a recreation of old Brunei — it is old Brunei, still functioning. The settlement's continued existence is itself a deliberate policy choice, not an accident of poverty: the government has invested in modernising Kampong Ayer's infrastructure — piped water, electricity, waste systems — specifically to keep the community viable on the water rather than relocating it entirely to land, treating it as living heritage rather than an informal settlement to be cleared.
Wear the life jacket the whole crossing. Generally uncrowded; busiest with boat traffic in the late afternoon. Modest dress, as anywhere in Brunei; no specific mosque-level dress code needed just for the boat ride.
Walk:Next, stop 3: Brunei Museum. It's about 27 minutes on foot, about 1.7 km to the east. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
3. Brunei Museum
Muzium Brunei
Stop 3 of 3: Brunei Museum. Locally, Muzium Brunei.
Go by car or river boat to Kota Batu, 45–60 minutes: natural history and Islamic art collections beside the river, next to the Malay Technology Museum — pair the two in one outing.
Brunei's history as a trading sultanate stretches back centuries before the modern capital took shape. That power receded over the following centuries as European colonial expansion reshaped Borneo: territory was ceded to the neighbouring Brooke family's Sarawak and to British North Borneo, and by the late 19th century Brunei's land area had shrunk dramatically. In 1888 the sultanate became a British protectorate, a status that gave it external defence and foreign-policy oversight from London while leaving internal and religious affairs to the Sultan — an arrangement that shaped Brunei's later, distinctive path to full independence.
No touching displayed artefacts. Generally quiet; check on the day. Generally allowed; check for restrictions in specific galleries.
End of the walk
