Banda Neira is the small harbour town of the Banda Islands in Maluku, once the world's only source of nutmeg. It is the transport hub for the group: flights and PELNI boats land here, and boats to Banda Besar, Banda Api and the outer islands leave from the same waterfront. The town itself is walkable in an afternoon; the diving, the volcano and the nutmeg plantations are why people stay four or five nights.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk. For the lighthouse, Maloli Beach and the far side of the island, take an ojek (motorcycle taxi) or rent a motorbike from a local; agree the price before you set off. Boats to the other islands leave from the main harbour — ask at your guesthouse the day before.
