Go for one night, two if you rockhound or hike: a small town on Highway 62 between Belleville and Algonquin Park, best late May to mid-October.
Bancroft is a town of about 4,000 people on the Canadian Shield, 100 km north of Belleville on Highway 62, and it calls itself the mineral capital of Canada. Uranium was mined here from the 1950s until 1982, and the rock shops and the end-of-July Gemboree still pull collectors. Most visitors come for one night as a stop between Belleville and Algonquin Provincial Park, or as a base for trails, lakes and cottage country. There is no train or scheduled bus, so you need a car.

Get around
A car is the only practical way to reach Bancroft and to see anything outside the centre: Highway 62 runs south to Belleville and north toward Algonquin Park, Highway 28 runs southwest to Peterborough. Downtown is walkable in 10–15 minutes. There is a local taxi (Backwoods Taxi, +1 613-553-8253) but no town bus and no scheduled intercity service; check current operators before relying on any.
