Skip Balykchy as a base: it's a dusty transport hub with little to do. Use it only to change marshrutkas between Bishkek and the Issyk-Kul shore, or for a quick smoked-fish stop.
Balykchy sits at the western tip of Issyk-Kul, where the road from Bishkek splits into the north and south lake routes. Once a fishing port, it's now a transit town with few attractions. Most travellers pass through in 15 minutes. If you need a bed or a meal, the main road has basic options, but the lake's real appeal starts 30 km east.

- Greeting: Handshake for men; hand on heart; avoid: Ignoring elders
- Yurt: Enter right foot first, men sit left, women right (traditionally); avoid: Stepping on the threshold or pointing feet at the hearth

Scams and watch-outs
- Marshrutka drivers may try to charge extra for baggage: refuse politely.
- Smoked fish vendors swarm stopped vehicles; prices are low but check the fish is fresh.
- No ATM in town – bring som from Bishkek.
