Balestrate
Go for 2–3 nights in Jun or Sep as a cheap beach base between Palermo and Trapani; skip Jul–Aug unless you book beds months ahead.
Balestrate is a small seaside town of about 6,400 people on the Gulf of Castellammare, roughly 50 km from both Palermo and Trapani. Its population swells to near 30,000 in summer, when Italians and northern Europeans fill the two long sandy beaches and the west-beach promenade. There is almost no sightseeing: you come for warm shallow water, low prices and easy day-trips to Segesta, Erice and the Zingaro reserve. Two or three nights is enough; a week works if you treat it as a beach base and rent a car.

Get around
The town is walkable: station, Piazza Rettore Evola and the west beach are within about 15 minutes on foot. Buses (AST, Autoservizi Russo, Segesta autolinee) link Palermo, Alcamo, Castellammare del Golfo and Trapani, but services thin out on Sundays. A car makes the day-trips work; the A29 has the Balestrate exit. Trains on the Palermo–Trapani line stop in the centre.
