Balassagyarmat is a small former county seat on the Ipoly river, which is also the Slovak border. It is a half-day town: a neo-classical county hall, a Palóc folk museum, a handful of churches and a riverside walk. Most travellers see it as a stop between Budapest and the Nógrád hills, or as a base for Hollókő and the Ipoly valley.
