Balapitiya
Half a day: stop for a Madu River boat safari and a beach break, then move on to Galle or Hikkaduwa. Not a base.
Balapitiya is a small beach town on Sri Lanka's south-west coast, 47 km north of Galle and 107 km south of Colombo. Its main draw is the Madu River estuary — a mangrove boat safari with monitor lizards, birds and a cinnamon island. The beach is quiet but not spectacular. Most travellers use it as a lunch-and-river stop between Colombo and Galle, or as a low-key overnight before heading south.
