Balancán is a small Tabasco river town of about 14,000 people, roughly 2 h 30 min by bus from Villahermosa. Its draw is outside town: the Moral Reforma Maya zone, which you will likely have to yourself, and the Wanha' Biosphere Reserve wetlands along the San Pedro River. The town itself is a plaza, a church and a small Maya museum. Come for one night with transport arranged, not for a resort stay.

Get around
The town stretches along the river, so walking the centre is fine but outlying sites are not walkable. Taxis are the practical way to Moral Reforma and the ejidos; a bike helps inside town. Combis (Transportes Jaguar, Gregorio Méndez 506, Centro) serve nearby villages but are unreliable — confirm the return trip before you go.
