Bala is a small market town of about 2,000 people on Llyn Tegid, the largest natural lake in Wales, at the south-east edge of Eryri (Snowdonia). It is the base for the National Whitewater Centre at Frongoch and for quieter walking in the Aran and Arenig ranges. There is no mainline station: you arrive by bus or car, and the Bala Lake Railway runs 9 miles south to Llanuwchllyn.
