Bakewell
Stay one night in Bakewell only if you want Chatsworth and Haddon Hall at opening; otherwise base in Sheffield or Chesterfield and day-trip in.
Bakewell is a small market town of about 4,000 people and the only sizeable town inside the Peak District National Park, with the park authority's visitor centre on Bridge Street. The town itself takes half a day: a medieval bridge, a Saxon-founded church, a Tudor house museum and the pudding shops. The real draw is outside town — Chatsworth House 4 miles east and Haddon Hall 2 miles south, both reached by bus or car, both needing a timed visit. Bakewell has no railway station, so you arrive by bus from Sheffield, Chesterfield or Derby.

Get around
The town is compact and walkable: The Square to All Saints Church is about 5 minutes on foot. There is no railway station and no bus station — buses stop around The Square. Bus 218 (Sheffield, about 1 h, via Baslow; some weekday and all weekend journeys call at Chatsworth) and bus 170 (Chesterfield, about 1 h, via Baslow and Chatsworth) are the useful routes; the Transpeak TP1 links Derby, Matlock and Buxton. For Chatsworth and Haddon Hall, use the bus or a taxi; taxis are limited, so book ahead in the evening.

Bakewell is a low-crime small town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are traffic on the A6 and the narrow bridge, wet limestone paths and fast-changing weather on the moors — carry a waterproof and tell someone your route.
