Bairnsdale
Give Bairnsdale one night as a Gippsland road or rail stop, or two if you use it as a base for Paynesville and the Mitchell River.
Bairnsdale is the service town for East Gippsland: a railhead, a hospital town and the last big supermarket before the coast road east. The town itself fills an afternoon (art gallery, river gardens, cultural trail), and it works best as a bed for the lakes and the rail trail rather than as a destination on its own.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter days are cold and windy; pack a jacket even in the centre.
- Train services are few: about three a day each way, so book the return you want.
- Fuel and supermarket choice thins out east of town: fill up before Orbost and Cann River.
- Some V/Line coach links along the coast have been flagged as discontinued: check the timetable before you plan around them.
A small, quiet country town; the real risks are wildlife on the roads at dusk, cold windy winter days and long empty drives east with few fuel stops.
