Baiersbronn
Come for 2 nights if you hike or eat well; skip it as a day trip from Freiburg or Baden-Baden — the Murg Valley is 1.5–2 h each way.
Baiersbronn is not one town but nine villages strung along the upper Murg Valley in the northern Black Forest, with more Michelin stars than any other rural area in Germany and 550 km of marked trails. Trains stop at seven of the villages, so you can sleep by a station and walk out the door. Two nights covers a waterfall hike, a monastery and one serious dinner; three nights adds the national park centre at Ruhestein. A car is not needed if you stay near a station and use the KONUS guest card.

Get around
The Karlsruhe Stadtbahn lines S8 and S81 run up the valley and stop at Friedrichstal, Baiersbronn, Klosterreichenbach, Heselbach, Huzenbach, Schwarzenberg and Schönmünzach. Buses link the villages and the Ruhestein national park centre. Hiking trails start from most stations. A car helps for the side valleys and for dinner at the starred restaurants, which sit away from the railway.

- Mitteltal
- Between Baiersbronn and Tonbach; guesthouses and holiday flats, good for families with a car.
- Klosterreichenbach / Schwarzenberg
- Northern end of the valley near Kloster Reichenbach and the road up to Ruhestein; cheapest beds, fewest services.

Scams and watch-outs
- Baiersbronn is nine villages, not one centre: check which village your hotel is in before booking, or you may be 6 km from the station you arrive at.
- The starred restaurants are in Tonbach and Mitteltal, not in the main village; book a taxi back or stay on site.
- Many kitchens close one or two days a week and the valley shuts early — reserve dinner, and do not count on a late meal.
- Mountain huts and some cable-car or summer-lift services run seasonally; check before you plan a hike around one.
- Trail markings are good but mobile coverage in the upper valleys is patchy: carry a paper map or an offline map.
- Winter: valley roads are cleared, but forest paths ice over; bring traction aids.
Very safe. The real risks are weather and logistics: sudden fog and cold rain on the ridges, icy paths in winter, thin bus services in the evening, and no taxi rank in the smaller villages — save a local taxi number.
