Baie-James (Jamésie, Eeyou Istchee) is a territory of about 350,000 km² — roughly the size of Germany — between the 49th and 55th parallels in Northern Quebec. It is not a place you pass through; it is a place you drive into. The paved James Bay Road runs north from Matagami to Radisson, with gravel spurs of about 90 km each to the Cree communities of Waskaganish, Eastmain and Wemindji. Come for hydroelectric dams, Cree villages, fishing, and long empty road. Plan two or more days for the drive from Matagami to Radisson, carry days of food and water, and expect no mobile service between villages.
