Baia de Arieș
A half-day stop on the drive between Cluj-Napoca and Arieșeni or Roșia Montană: see the monastery, the old church and the Emperor's Beech, then move on.
Baia de Arieș is a former gold-mining town of about 3,000 people in Alba County, 90 km southwest of Cluj-Napoca on National Highway 75. Its sights — a pilgrimage monastery, an 18th-century church and a curious beech tree — fill a morning or afternoon. Most travellers use it as a break on the way to the Apuseni Mountains or Roșia Montană, not as a base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and eye contact; 'bună ziua' by day, 'bună seara' in the evening; avoid: First names with older people before they offer them
- Visiting a home: Take shoes off at the door; bring flowers (an odd number), chocolate or wine; avoid: Even numbers of flowers — they are for funerals
- Churches: Cover shoulders and knees; women may cover their hair in monasteries; stand quietly at the back during services; avoid: Crossing in front of the altar area or photographing people praying
- Conversation: Food, football, travel in Romania and family are safe topics; avoid: Dracula as the country's identity, calling Romanians Slavs, and careless talk about Roma or Hungarians
- Hospitality: Accept at least a taste of what you are offered; thank the host by name; avoid: Refusing all food and drink outright
- Queues and transport: Give seats to older people and parents with children; avoid: Loud phone calls in train compartments
Scams and watch-outs
- Muncel Monastery is a pilgrimage site; check if a service is in progress before entering.
- The Emperor's Beech is off a forest road: ask locally for the exact path or use a GPS track.
- No ATM in town — bring cash (lei).
Very safe; the main risk is driving on DN75, which is narrow and winding in places. No violent crime reported.
