How to get to Bahrain: airports, flights and border crossings

Use this table to pick your route and rough budget before you book. Flight times are typical nonstop or one-stop totals; fares are 2026 estimates for a return economy ticket and move a lot with season and how early you book.

Step 1 — check whether you should travel. Bahrain's own and foreign governments' advisories are the first thing to read, because since February 2026 Iranian missiles and drones have struck targets in Bahrain and airlines have suspended or rerouted flights at short notice. If your government advises against non-essential travel, insurance may not cover you.

Step 2 — book the flight. Bahrain International Airport (BAH) is the only airport with scheduled passenger flights. It sits on Muharraq island, about 7 km from central Manama, and is a hub for Gulf Air plus a base for several Gulf and low-cost carriers. Nonstop service from London is the shortest hop from Europe; from North America, Australia and New Zealand you will connect through a European or Gulf hub.

Step 3 — sort the visa before you fly. Many nationalities can get a visa on arrival or an e-visa online; some need to arrange it in advance. Rules depend on your passport, so confirm on Bahrain's official government portal and see our visa page.

Step 4 — plan the airport transfer. Metered taxis and ride-hailing apps run from the terminal to Manama hotels in roughly 15–25 minutes outside peak traffic. Some hotels offer a paid or free shuttle; ask when you book. Public buses serve the airport but are slow with luggage.

Step 5 — know your onward options. If you are combining Bahrain with Saudi Arabia, the King Fahd Causeway is the only road link; there is no scheduled passenger ferry for tourists. See our getting around page for transport inside the country.

Flight schedules to Bahrain are unusually volatile right now. Carriers have cut frequencies and rerouted around airspace closures since February 2026, so a route that exists today may not exist next month. Build in a buffer day before any onward booking, and check your airline's app the day before you fly.

The King Fahd Causeway is a busy road crossing, not a walkable border. You need a vehicle, a Saudi or Bahraini entry stamp as applicable, and patience at peak weekends. Not every car-hire company allows its cars across the causeway — confirm before you sign.

Cruise ships call at Khalifa Bin Salman Port, but there is no scheduled ferry service you can book as a foot passenger. If you arrive by cruise, treat the port as a day stop and use taxis into Manama.

Weather shapes when you go more than how you get there: November to March is the comfortable window. Summer heat and humidity make even the airport transfer unpleasant, and the same period is peak fare season around Eid and New Year.
