Bahía Blanca
One night as a Patagonia staging stop, or skip: the centre is a half-day walk, the port museums are the real reason to get off the bus.
Bahía Blanca is a 300,000-person port and rail junction at the top of Patagonia, 100 km north of the Colorado River line where prices start climbing. It is not a sightseeing city: the draw is a compact Art Nouveau-era centre around Plaza Rivadavia, two free museums out at Ingeniero White port, and cheap stocking up before the south. Most travellers pass through in a night or use it as a base for Sierra de la Ventana and the Atlantic beaches.

Scams and watch-outs
- Alcohol sales in grocery shops stop at 22:30; clubs run roughly 23:00–04:00.
- The overnight train from Buenos Aires was suspended in 2022 and Trenes Argentinos has said it will not be restored: plan on bus or plane.
- Ingeniero White is a working port and petrochemical area, not a polished waterfront: go for the museums, not for a beach walk.
- Summer (Jan–Feb) is hot and dry; the centre empties and coastal resorts fill up.
- Bus terminal is about 2 km south-east of the centre: allow time or take a taxi with bags.
A normal Argentine provincial city: the centre is fine on foot in daylight and busy at night around Avenida Alem. Take the usual care with phones and bags at the bus terminal, and don't wander the port or petrochemical edges at night.
