Bad Fallingbostel
Come for one night as a heath base, not as a destination: the town itself is 2 hours of sights, the value is the Lieth woods, the Böhme valley and Walsrode next door.
Bad Fallingbostel is a small spa town on the Böhme river in the Lüneburg Heath, between Soltau and Walsrode, with a 1,000-year-old centre, a timber-framed farm museum and a heated forest pool. It works as a quiet, cheap base for heath walking and cycling, or as a single stop between Hamburg and Hanover on the A7. Most travellers see it in half a day and sleep one night.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Two stations, Bad Fallingbostel and Dorfmark, sit on the Heath Railway between Hanover and Soltau. Buses cover the villages but run thinly; a car or bike makes the heath and Walsrode far easier.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- The Fallingbostel Military Museum is inside a barracks: you need photo ID or a passport to enter, and opening is limited — check before travelling.
- Hof der Heidmark opens only Thursday afternoons April–October; outside that, phone for an appointment.
- The Lieth pool is seasonal, roughly May–September, and closes in bad weather.
- Village buses are sparse on Sundays and public holidays.
A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are deer and cyclists on rural roads, thin bus service after dark, and tick bites on heath walks in summer.
