Bad Dürkheim
Stay one night, or two if you want the spa and the forest: the town itself is a half-day, the Wurstmarkt in mid-September is the reason to book ahead.
Bad Dürkheim is a spa and wine town of about 18,000 people on the German Wine Route, at the edge of the Palatinate Forest, roughly 20 km west of Ludwigshafen and Mannheim and 15 km north of Neustadt an der Weinstraße. It is the Palatinate's third-largest winegrowing centre, with about 855 ha of vineyards, and its sights are two ruined castles, a Celtic wall and a giant barrel. Most travellers use it as a quiet base for the Wine Route or a stop between Mannheim and Neustadt.

Get around
The town is walkable: station to spa park is about 15 min on foot. Rhein-Haardtbahn Line 4 (narrow-gauge tram) links Bad Dürkheim with Ludwigshafen and Mannheim via Maxdorf; regional trains also run to Neustadt and Mannheim. Buses reach the forest trailheads, but a car or bike is easier for Limburg Abbey and Hardenburg.
