Azumino
安曇野市
Base in Hotaka for 1–2 nights: wasabi farm, water mills and Alps views by rented bike. Without a car or bike, skip it.
Azumino is a spread-out farming city in Nagano Prefecture, on the JR Oito line between Matsumoto and Hakuba. Sights sit kilometres apart along Route 147, so a bicycle or car decides whether the day works. Most travellers see it as a half-day from Matsumoto or a one-night stop on the way to the Northern Alps.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Sights are far apart and buses are infrequent: without a bike or car you will walk a lot or miss things.
- Many farms, museums and restaurants close in winter or on irregular days: check before you ride out.
- Rural roads have narrow shoulders and fast traffic; use lights at dusk.
- Cash is still needed at small shops and some farm entrances.
Very safe. The real risks are rural roads with no footpath, deer at dusk, and winter ice on the farm lanes: wear something visible and carry a light.
