Ayder

Go for 2 nights in Jun–Sep only: a yayla at 1,350 m with day walks to Kavron and Avusor; in winter it is snowed in and largely shut.

Ayder is a summer highland resort in the Kaçkar Mountains, reached by a paved valley road from Ardeşen on the Black Sea coast. It has no resident population: hotels, cafés and dolmuşes run June to September, and the place empties once the snow arrives. Come for cool air, timber-clad guesthouses and day trips to the upper yaylas, not for a resort beach or a big sight list.

Get around

The village is walkable, but the valley road carries traffic and has no side trail, so most hikers ride up. Dolmuşes run from Pazar via Çamlıhemşin to the Ayder centre and some continue to Kavron; last departure up the valley is around 18:00 in summer. For Avusor, Huser and rougher upper roads, use local minibuses, taxis or a 4WD tour arranged in the village.

  • Hospitality: Accept tea or at least a sip; bring sweets or pastries to a home; avoid: Refusing food repeatedly; showing the soles of your feet

Scams and watch-outs

  • Mountain weather turns fast: fog can cut visibility to a few metres, so carry a compass and know how to use it if you leave the road.
  • Upper roads can be rough or temporarily closed after heavy rain or snow; ask locally before setting out.
  • The village hamam was demolished and a replacement had not been built as of mid-2025: check before counting on it.
  • Fill up before leaving the coast highway; the nearest filling station is about 1 km north of Çamlıhemşin.
  • Don't leave the coast late: the last dolmuş up the valley goes by about 18:00 in summer.

Ayder is a small highland village and personal safety is not the issue; the real risks are sudden mountain fog, rough upper roads and the winter shutdown, when most beds and buses stop.
