Avon
Avon, Ohio
Skip Avon as a base unless you need a cheap I-90 stop west of Cleveland: one night, or a half-day for the duck-tape festival in late June.
Avon is a Cleveland suburb of about 21,000 people on I-90, roughly 25 minutes from downtown. There is little sightseeing: a Greek Revival house, a sunflower field, minor-league baseball and a duct-tape festival. Most travellers use it as a cheaper bed for Cleveland or Cedar Point, or pass through on the way to Lorain County.

A car is effectively required: sights are spread along Detroit Rd, Chester Rd and Center Rd, and sidewalks are patchy. I-90/SR-2 runs through the north of town for Cleveland (east) and Toledo/Sandusky (west). Rideshare exists but waits can be long outside the centre.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances between sights are longer than they look on a map; plan by car, not on foot.
- Winter ice and lake-effect snow can slow I-90; check road conditions before driving.
- Festival and ballgame parking fills early; arrive before the first pitch or parade.
A low-crime suburb; the real risks are driving (I-90 traffic, winter ice) and long unlit stretches between sights after dark. Standard US precautions apply.
