Give Ávila one night, or a half-day from Madrid: walk the 2.5 km wall loop, see the cathedral, then leave by 18:00.
Ávila is a walled medieval city on the Meseta plateau at over 1,100 m, 120 km northwest of Madrid and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The walls are the reason to come and take about half a day; the Romanesque churches and St Teresa's convents fill the rest. It is cold in winter and cool even in summer, and most visitors see it as a stop between Madrid and Salamanca rather than a base.
