Avila Beach
Stay 1–2 nights if you want a small, sheltered beach town; skip it as a base and day-trip from San Luis Obispo or Pismo Beach instead.
Avila Beach is a half-mile beach and a short walkable Front Street about 16 km south of San Luis Obispo, off Highway 101. Point San Luis blocks the northwesterly wind, so the sand is warmer than at neighbouring beaches and the water can reach the low 20s °C in summer. One full day covers the pier, the beach and the bike trail; a second day adds the lighthouse tour or the hot springs. Most travellers use it as a stop on a Central Coast drive rather than a multi-night base.

Get around
Downtown is walkable end to end in about 10 minutes. A paved, mostly flat 3-mile bike trail runs from near Highway 101 to the beach promenade, with rentals at both ends. A car helps for the lighthouse staging area, Port San Luis and the hot springs; there is no useful local bus network for visitors.
