Aviemore is the main base for the Cairngorms National Park: a straggle of a village at 214 m on the A9 and the Highland main line, 3 hours by train from Edinburgh or Glasgow. It is a year-round outdoor town — hill-walking, mountain biking, lochs, reindeer and a small, snow-unreliable ski area — not a sightseeing city. Two nights covers the village and Loch an Eilein; three or more if you want a Munro or the Speyside Way.

Scams and watch-outs
- The A9 is mostly single carriageway with blind bends and impatient overtaking: drive to the conditions and use the de-trunked B9152 loops where possible.
- Cairngorm weather changes fast; carry waterproofs, a map and a charged phone, and tell someone your route.
- Midges are fierce from June to August, especially near water at dusk; repellent and long sleeves help.
- The funicular has closed for engineering works before and can close again: check the official site before travelling up.
- Mobile signal is patchy in the glens and on the plateau.
Aviemore is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are mountain weather, ice, midges and the A9. Tell someone your route, carry layers and a map, and call 999 for mountain rescue.
