Avezzano
Give Avezzano one night as a Marsica base, or skip it: the rebuilt centre is a 2-hour stop, and the mountains are the reason to come.
Avezzano is a market town of about 42,500 on the Fucino plain, flattened by the 1915 earthquake and rebuilt on a grid. Its own sights fill half a day; its value is as a rail and road base for the Marsica mountains, the Fucino tunnels and the villages around it. Come for the mountains, not the town.

Get around
The centre is small and flat: Piazza Matteotti, Piazza Risorgimento, Piazza Castello and Villa Torlonia are all within a 15-minute walk. Local buses are run by SCAV; taxis wait at Piazza Matteotti in front of the station. For the mountains, the Fucino villages and the tunnels you need a car or a booked tour.
