Avarua
Avarua is a one-street capital: do the market and the shops in the morning, rest in the shade when the sun is high, and remember that almost everything closes on Sunday except church.
Avarua is the only town on Rarotonga, a few blocks along the coast road with a harbour at each end. The trips that go wrong are the ones that treat it like a resort: arriving on a Sunday when shops and most cafes are shut, walking the road at noon in summer, or planning a late-night connection when the flights land in the middle of the night. Four short walking clusters cover the town; the beaches and the lagoon are a bus or scooter ride away from one kept bed.
