The honest verdict
Avarua is the only town on Rarotonga, a few blocks along the coast road with a harbour at each end. The trips that go wrong are the ones that treat it like a resort: arriving on a Sunday when shops and most cafes are shut, walking the road at noon in summer, or planning a late-night connection when the flights land in the middle of the night. Four short walking clusters cover the town; the beaches and the lagoon are a bus or scooter ride away from one kept bed.
