Australia honeymoon itinerary: romantic route

For a honeymoon, do 10–14 nights with two or three bases and fly between them: Sydney 4 nights, then Cairns and Port Douglas 3–4 for the reef, then Melbourne 3 with a Great Ocean Road loop. Go October–April in the south, May–October in the tropical north. Skip it if you want one long road trip; that is a different holiday.

Overview

A honeymoon in Australia works best as a short chain of bases rather than a road trip. Distances are the trap: Sydney to Cairns is roughly 2,400 km by road and three full days of driving, while the flight takes about three hours. Fly the long legs, drive only the scenic short ones.

The classic 12-night honeymoon is Sydney, then the tropical north, then Melbourne with the Great Ocean Road. It gives you a city, a reef and a coast, with two internal flights. If you would rather slow down, cut one base and add the nights to the other two.

Season decides the order. The south (Sydney, Melbourne, Tasmania, Adelaide) is best October–April; the tropical north (Cairns, Whitsundays, Darwin) is best May–October, when the wet season has passed. April–May and September–October are the sweet spots when both halves work.

  • Difficulty: easy. No hiking required, though the Blue Mountains and Great Ocean Road add walking.
  • Fitness filter: easy (city and resort), moderate (coastal walks, reef snorkelling), hard (multi-day hikes) — pick per day.

Swap Cairns for Uluru (2–3 nights) if you travel May–September and want desert instead of reef. Swap Melbourne for Tasmania (5–7 nights) if you have 16 nights or more.

Day by day

Days 1–4, Sydney. Land in the morning and keep the first day light: a flat walk around Circular Quay and The Rocks, an early dinner, an early night. Day two is the ferry to Manly and the Opera House; day three the Bondi to Coogee cliff walk, about 6 km and two hours at an easy pace, then a spa afternoon. Day four is a Blue Mountains day trip by train, roughly two hours each way, or a beach day if you would rather not move.

Days 5–7, Cairns or Port Douglas. Fly up in the morning. Port Douglas is quieter and closer to the reef and Daintree; Cairns has more flights and restaurants. Give the reef a full day — a outer-reef pontoon or a small-boat snorkel trip — and keep the next day slow: Daintree rainforest, a mangrove cruise, or nothing at all.

Days 8–9, Melbourne. Fly down and stay in the city centre or Fitzroy. Laneway dinner, a market morning at Queen Victoria Market, the NGV galleries, and a show or a spa. This is the food and coffee leg, so book one serious dinner here.

Days 10–11, Great Ocean Road. Pick up a car in Melbourne and drive to Apollo Bay, about three hours with stops. Sleep in Apollo Bay or Port Campbell, see the Twelve Apostles early before the coaches arrive, and drive back to Melbourne the next afternoon.

Day 12, Melbourne. A slow morning, a last long lunch, and a spare night before the flight home. Long-haul departures from Melbourne and Sydney mostly leave in the morning or late morning, so the final night in the city beats a dash from the coast.

Where to stay

Sydney: The Rocks and Circular Quay put the harbour, ferries and Opera House on your doorstep, at the highest prices. Surry Hills and Potts Point are quieter, walkable and better value, about 15–20 minutes from the water. Manly suits a beach-first honeymoon but adds a 30-minute ferry to every city plan.

Cairns and Port Douglas: Cairns esplanade hotels are central and cheaper; Port Douglas resorts are calmer and closer to the reef marina and Daintree. For a honeymoon, Port Douglas is usually the better base if you do not mind a one-hour transfer from Cairns airport.

Melbourne: the CBD grid is convenient and walkable; Fitzroy and South Yarra are more residential and better for cafés. For the Great Ocean Road, Apollo Bay is the comfortable midpoint and Port Campbell is closest to the Twelve Apostles at sunrise.

Book a room with a view for at least two nights — harbour in Sydney, ocean or rainforest in the north — and keep the rest simple. December–January is peak domestic holiday season, so coastal rooms and car hire go first; book those before flights.

Bookings

Book these before you fly, in this order: domestic flights (Sydney–Cairns, Cairns–Melbourne), the reef day trip, the Great Ocean Road car, then one special dinner. In December–January, add coastal accommodation and any island or Whitsundays sailing to the front of the list.

Domestic flights are the biggest variable. Booking two to four months out usually beats last-minute fares, and morning departures protect the day. Reef trips sell out in the dry season (June–August) and around school holidays; a small-boat snorkel trip needs booking earlier than a pontoon.

The Great Ocean Road car should be automatic, not manual, if you are not used to driving on the left, and pick up in the city rather than the airport to avoid one-way fees. Uluru and Kakadu add their own permits and tour bookings if you swap them in. Check current entry rules, visa or ETA requirements and any park passes before you pay for anything non-refundable.

  • Domestic flights: book 2–4 months ahead; morning departures.
  • Reef and island day trips: book 2–6 weeks ahead in peak season.
  • Great Ocean Road car: book with accommodation, automatic if unsure.
  • One special dinner: book 4–8 weeks ahead in Melbourne and Sydney.
  • December–January: book everything, including coastal rooms, months ahead.

Costs

A 12-night honeymoon for two, flying between cities and staying in mid-range to good hotels, lands around A$7,000–14,000 (about US$4,600–9,200) in 2026, excluding long-haul flights. The spread is mostly accommodation and how many tours you add.

Long-haul return flights from the US or UK are the single biggest line and vary too much by season to put one number on. Domestic flights between Sydney, Cairns and Melbourne are typically A$150–350 per person each way, more at short notice and in December–January.

Food is the easy place to save or splurge: A$25–45 per person for a good casual dinner, A$120–250 per person for a serious tasting-menu night. Reef day trips run roughly A$250–400 per person, Daintree tours A$150–250, and car hire on the Great Ocean Road about A$70–120 per day plus fuel. All figures are 2026 estimates; check current prices when you book.

Variations

If you have 14 nights or more, add Uluru (2–3 nights, May–September) between Sydney and Cairns, or swap Melbourne for Tasmania (5–7 nights, November–April) and fly Hobart. Both change the trip from a coast-and-city honeymoon into something with a wilderness day.

If you want fewer flights, do Sydney plus the Whitsundays (3 nights sailing) and skip Melbourne; that is a beach-and-reef honeymoon with one internal flight. If you want wine and food over reef, do Sydney, Melbourne and a Margaret River or Barossa add-on instead, though Perth adds a long flight.

If you have only 7 nights, keep it to Sydney 4 and one other base 3 — Cairns for reef or Melbourne for food — and accept that you will fly home wanting more. If you want a self-drive honeymoon, the Great Ocean Road plus Tasmania is the strongest pairing, but allow 14 nights and drive no more than three hours a day.

Questions people ask

What is a good honeymoon itinerary for Australia?

Twelve nights: Sydney 4, Cairns and Port Douglas 3, Melbourne 3, plus a 2-night Great Ocean Road loop. Fly between the cities and drive only the coast. Add Uluru or Tasmania if you have 14 nights or more.

How many days do I need for a honeymoon trip to Australia?

Ten nights is the practical minimum for two bases plus a short drive; 12–14 nights lets you add a third base without rushing. Seven nights works only if you keep to Sydney and one other place.

When is the best time for a honeymoon trip to Australia?

October–April for Sydney, Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road and Tasmania. May–October for Cairns, the Whitsundays and Darwin. April–May and September–October suit both halves of the country.
