The best places to take kids in Australia

For a first family trip, base 4–5 nights in Sydney for ferries, Bondi and the Blue Mountains, then fly to Cairns (Jun–Oct) for the reef or Melbourne for the Great Ocean Road. Skip long road trips between regions; one internal flight beats two days in the car.

Our top picks

Ranked for families with children roughly 4–14. Each pick works as a base of two to five nights, has something to do on a wet day, and does not depend on a long drive to be worthwhile.

Sydney first for almost everyone: ferries are the cheapest sightseeing in the country and double as transport. Cairns or the Whitsundays next if you are travelling May–October, Melbourne if you are not. Add the Great Ocean Road only as a 2–3 night loop from Melbourne, never as a through-route.

How we chose

Criteria, in order: how much of the day a child can spend moving rather than waiting; whether a car is needed every single day; whether there is a wet-day option; how easy the transfer is from an international arrival; and cost per day for a family of four.

We dropped places that only work with older teenagers, places where the main activity is a long one-way drive, and places where the nearest hospital or pharmacy is hours away. We kept a mix of city, coast and wildlife so a two-week trip does not repeat the same day.

When to go

Australia is a continent, so the season depends on the zone. The south — Sydney, Melbourne, Tasmania, Adelaide, Perth — is best October to April. The tropical north and the Red Centre — Cairns, the Whitsundays, Darwin, Uluru — are best May to October, when the dry season brings lower humidity and no cyclone risk.

April–May and September–October are the sweet spots when both halves work, which matters if you want reef and city in one trip. Australian school holidays (mid-December to late January, plus Easter) push up flight and hotel prices and fill family attractions; book early or travel in the shoulder weeks either side.

  • Book domestic flights early for the December–January peak.
  • Tasmania and the Great Ocean Road need a car; Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane do not.
  • Add one spare day before the flight home.

Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, TasmaniaOct–AprWarm to hot days; Tasmania stays cool even in summer

Red Centre (Uluru, Alice Springs)May–SepCooler days; summer can exceed 40 °C

Tropical stinger season in the sea is roughly Nov–May; swim in netted enclosures or on the reef (check).

Getting there

Almost every family trip starts with a long-haul flight into Sydney or Melbourne, then one or two domestic flights. Sydney to Melbourne is about 1h30 by air; Sydney to Cairns about 3 hours. Driving Sydney to Cairns takes two to three days each way and is the most common way a family itinerary falls apart.

Within cities, trains, trams and ferries do the work: Sydney's Opal network covers ferries to Manly and the zoo, and Melbourne's trams run through the centre. For the Great Ocean Road, Tasmania, Kangaroo Island and the Red Centre, hire a car — book child seats with the rental in advance, as they are not guaranteed on the day.

  • Fly between regions; drive only within one region.
  • Book rental child seats when you book the car.
  • Domestic baggage limits are strict on low-cost fares.

FAQ

Questions people ask

The best places to take kids in Australia?

Sydney for a first trip, then one contrast region: Cairns or the Whitsundays in the dry season (Jun–Oct), or Melbourne with the Great Ocean Road in the south's warm months (Oct–Apr). Brisbane, Tasmania, Canberra and the Blue Mountains are strong second-trip additions.

When is the best time to go in Australia?

South (Sydney, Melbourne, Tasmania, Adelaide, Perth): October to April. Tropical north and Red Centre (Cairns, Whitsundays, Darwin, Uluru): May to October. April–May and September–October suit both halves. Avoid the mid-December to late-January school holidays if you want lower prices.

How many days do I need in Australia?

Ten days is the practical minimum for two regions, 14 days for three. Allow 4–5 nights in Sydney, 3–4 in a second city or reef base, and one spare day before the flight home. Anything under a week means one city only.
