What the area is like
South Austin means everything below Lady Bird Lake, but most visitors mean 78704: the strip of South Congress (SoCo) running south from the river, South First Street, South Lamar and Barton Springs Road. It was the centre of Austin's counterculture and is now a mix of old bungalows, new apartment blocks, food trucks, vintage shops and music venues.
The rhythm is street-level and spread out. South Congress is the postcard: shops, bars and the Texas State Capitol framed looking north across the river. South First and South Lamar are where locals eat. Barton Springs Road leads to Zilker Park and the spring-fed pool, the city's summer living room.
Distances are short in kilometres but long in heat. In July and August, a 20-minute walk at 2pm is a real cost; plan mornings and evenings outdoors and use rideshares or buses in the middle of the day.
Should you stay here or not
Stay in South Austin if food, bars and live music matter more than monuments, and if you have a car or are happy to use rideshares. Rates are usually lower than downtown for the same standard, parking is easier, and you can walk to dinner without crossing the river.
Do not stay here if you want to step out of your hotel into museums, the Capitol and the convention centre. Downtown and the UT area put those on foot; from South Congress you are looking at a 25–40 minute walk or a short ride each time.
Families and pool-focused trips do well around Zilker and Barton Springs. Light sleepers should avoid rooms directly on South Congress or East Riverside, where bar noise and traffic run late.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Walkable food and bar strips on South Congress and South First | Downtown sights need a bus, car or rideshare |
| Barton Springs Pool and Zilker Park on the doorstep | Summer heat makes midday walking unpleasant |
| Usually cheaper than downtown, with easier parking | Some blocks are noisy late into the night |
| Good bus coverage along the main corridors | Side streets are hilly and poorly lit in places |
Eating and drinking
South Congress is the tourist-facing strip: Tex-Mex, burgers, ice cream and coffee, with long waits at weekend brunch. South First and South Lamar are the local picks, with food trucks parked in yards, Vietnamese and Thai kitchens, taquerias and barbecue trailers. Expect to queue at the well-known barbecue spots and to eat late; many kitchens serve past 22:00 on weekends.
Breakfast tacos are the cheap, fast option almost everywhere, and most places have vegetarian versions. For a sit-down dinner, book ahead on Friday and Saturday. Bars cluster on Rainey Street north of the river and along South Congress and South First; live music rooms range from free early sets to ticketed shows.
Getting there and around
From Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, a rideshare or taxi to 78704 takes roughly 15–25 minutes depending on traffic; check the current fare band before you book. CapMetro buses run along South Congress, South Lamar and Riverside toward downtown, with stops a few minutes' walk from most hotels; check routes, frequency and fare on the CapMetro site.
By car, I-35 and MoPac (Loop 1) bracket the district, and Ben White Blvd (US 290/71) closes it to the south. Parking is free at many motels and paid or permit-only near South Congress. Bikes and scooters work well along the river trails, but the streets themselves are hilly and traffic-heavy.
On foot, the river bridges connect South Congress to downtown in about 25–40 minutes. The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail along Lady Bird Lake is the easiest car-free link and is busy from dawn to dusk.
