Austin airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Austin, Minnesota is a small city in Mower County, southern Minnesota, about 160 km south of the Twin Cities and roughly 70 km from Rochester. It has no commercial airport of its own, so every route in starts with a flight to a bigger city and a road leg after it.

Two airports make sense. Rochester International (RST) is the closest, a short regional field with limited airlines and few daily flights. Minneapolis–St Paul (MSP) is the state's main hub: many more flights, usually cheaper fares, but a longer drive. Compare the airfare plus the transfer before you choose.

From Rochester (RST): the airport sits north of Rochester, and the drive to Austin runs south-east on US-14 and US-218. A rental car desk at the airport is the simplest option if you plan to move around Mower County. Ride-hail coverage in Rochester is thinner than in a big city, so request a car before you land or book a shuttle; a metered taxi may need to be called rather than found at the kerb.

From Minneapolis–St Paul (MSP): the airport is south of the Twin Cities, which puts you on the right side for the drive south on I-35 and then US-218 or US-14. This is a straightforward highway run in good weather and a slow one in snow. Rental cars are plentiful at MSP, and ride-hail pickup is signposted in the ground-transport area.

There is no train from either airport to Austin. Amtrak's long-distance trains do not serve Austin, Minnesota, and the nearest useful rail points are elsewhere in the state — check current timetables if rail is part of your plan.

The cheapest way in is usually a shared intercity coach from the Twin Cities to a nearby stop, then a local bus or a short ride-hail for the last leg. It is also the slowest, and connections may not line up with your flight.

A rental car costs more per day but pays for itself if you are staying outside the centre or visiting nearby towns. Remember insurance, fuel and any one-way drop fee, which can reach hundreds of dollars if you pick up at one airport and leave the car elsewhere.

Ride-hail and taxis are the no-planning option and the most expensive per trip. Tipping is expected: 15–20% for a taxi or ride-hail, added in the app.

Austin's own bus network covers the town and nearby routes, but it is built for residents, not for airport runs. Frequencies are low in the evening and at weekends, so check the timetable before you rely on it.

Outside the big transit cities of the US, ride-hailing is the default for evenings and car-free days, and that applies here. If you are staying in the centre and only need shops and restaurants, you can manage without a car. If you want the surrounding countryside, small towns or state parks, a car is the practical choice.

Book the road leg before you fly. RST is small, and a delayed flight can leave you with no car and no driver at an hour when nothing is open.

Winter changes everything. Snow and ice add real time to the MSP drive, and rental cars may come with all-season tyres rather than winter ones — drive to conditions and check the state road conditions before setting out.

If you are comparing airports, add the transfer to the airfare. A cheap MSP fare can cost more overall than a pricier RST fare once you pay for the drive.

US plugs are type A and B at 120 V. Chargers are usually dual-voltage; hair dryers and straighteners from 230 V countries need a converter. Tap water is drinkable.
