The honest verdict
Auckland is a sprawling city on a harbour, and the airport is a 30–60 minute drive from the centre with no train. The trips that go wrong fight the sprawl: a hire car collected at the airport and parked at a CBD hotel, a border declaration missed, or a first day of jet lag spent driving on the left. Four clusters on the harbour and the ridge cover a first visit on foot and by ferry; the rest of the Upper North Island is a road trip from a kept bed.
