Auburn
Auburn, California
Give Auburn one night, two at most: Old Town and the courthouse museum in half a day, then the river canyon or Hidden Falls. Skip it as a base for Tahoe.
Auburn is a Gold Rush town on a ridge where Interstate 80 meets California 49, about 30 mi (50 km) northeast of Sacramento and roughly an hour from Lake Tahoe's western shore. Old Town is small and walkable in an afternoon; the real draw is the American River canyon below it, with 40 mi of river in Auburn State Recreation Area and the Western States Trail. Most travellers pass through on I-80 or stop one night on the way to the Sierra.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: the city sits on a ridge and local roads twist around it. Placer County Transit runs limited buses in part of Auburn and does not run on Sundays. Amtrak's Capitol Corridor stops at Auburn station, 277 Nevada St, but the station is not a transport hub for the canyon or Hidden Falls.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer afternoons regularly pass 35 °C; carry water on any canyon trail and start early.
- Hidden Falls Regional Park requires a parking reservation and prepaid permit online on weekends and holidays.
- River swimming and whitewater on the North and Middle Forks are unguarded; currents are strong below the dams.
- Old Town is small: many kitchens close by 21:00, earlier on Sundays and Mondays.
- The miner statue sits a few yards from the freeway; the park behind it is loud, not a picnic spot.
Auburn is a low-crime small city; the real risks are summer heat on exposed canyon trails, fast cold water in the American River, and deer or cyclists on the ridge roads at dusk.
