Atlantic Beach
Two nights is enough: one beach day plus Fort Macon and the aquarium. Add a night only for a fishing charter or a slow sound-side afternoon.
Atlantic Beach is a small oceanfront town on Bogue Banks, a barrier island on North Carolina's Crystal Coast. The direct eastern access is the bridge from Morehead City; the island's other crossing is at Cape Carteret to Emerald Isle, at the western end. It is a beach-and-water town rather than a sightseeing city: the ocean, Fort Macon State Park, the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores and a handful of piers and seafood rooms. Come May to September for swimming, or April to October for cheaper rooms and quieter sand. Stay near the Circle or along NC-58 if you want to walk to the beach; you need a car for everything else. Budget roughly US$120–250 a day for two people including a room (check). It is a low-crime resort town; the real hazards are rip currents, summer sun and hurricane-season storms.

Get around
There is no public transport on Bogue Banks. A car is the practical default: NC-58 runs the length of the island, about 26 miles end to end, and takes roughly 45 minutes because of the low speed limit. Mile-marker signs every half-mile are how locals give directions. Taxis and rideshare exist but are thin, especially late.
