West, Atlanta: neighborhood guide

West Atlanta is not one neighborhood but a band of them running from the Chattahoochee River down to I-285. The Upper Westside and Riverside sit by the river with suburban-style streets; closer in are English Avenue and Vine City, Bankhead, Westview, Oakland City and Historic West End. Each has its own feel and its own main street, so treat "West" as a direction, not a single place to base yourself.

The area holds the Atlanta University Center, the country's largest concentration of historically Black colleges, founded in the years after the Civil War. Around it, Historic West End dates to the 1830s and keeps restored period homes and Victorian cottages, while Collier Heights is a historic district of ranch-style houses. Westview Cemetery and the Wren's Nest, the Joel Chandler Harris House, add the older layer.

The western edge is where the city meets the river: the Beltline's Westside Park and Maddox Park together form the largest green space in Atlanta, and the Upper Westside around Whittier Mill Village is where much of the newer building and eating has gone.

Stay in West Atlanta if you are in town for a game or concert at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, want a short MARTA ride to Downtown, or are visiting the AUC. Rates here are usually lower than Midtown or Buckhead, and the East-West Line puts Vine City, Ashby, Westlake and H.E. Holmes within a few stops of the center.

Do not stay here if your plan is to walk out of your hotel into bars and restaurants. West Atlanta's good tables are spread out, and the streets between the pockets are not made for strolling. If you are not driving, pick a hotel within a few minutes of a MARTA station and accept that evenings mean a ride.

The strongest concentration of restaurants is on the Upper Westside along Ellsworth Industrial Boulevard and the streets off it, where Bacchanalia has long been one of the city's benchmark tables, with a seasonal prix fixe menu in the $85 range (2026 estimate). Canoe, on Paces Ferry Road by the Chattahoochee, does Southern cooking with river views and a mid-range menu; both are dinner destinations rather than neighborhood drop-ins.

Historic West End and the AUC area are better for everyday food and for the Caribbean, West African and Southern kitchens that serve the colleges. Greenbriar Mall on the southwest side has a food court and chain options if you are driving through. For anything else, plan on a car or a ride.

MARTA's East-West Line is the backbone: Vine City, Ashby, Westlake and H.E. Holmes stations run west from Downtown, and the Proctor Creek Line reaches Bankhead. From the airport, take the Red or Gold line north and change to the East-West Line at Five Points. Fares are paid with a Breeze card or the MARTA app; check current fares and hours before a late trip.

By car, I-20 crosses the district, I-285 rings the southwest side and Langford Parkway runs through the middle. Parking is easy compared with Midtown, but rush hour on I-20 and Langford is slow. Fulton County Airport (FTY) handles general aviation only; commercial flights use Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) south of the city.
