Atins
Go for 3 nights if you kite or trek the Lençóis dunes; skip if you want a resort beach or easy road access — the last leg is a 4x4 or boat.
Atins is a sand-street fishing village at the mouth of the Rio Preguiças, on the edge of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. It is the quiet, low-traffic side of the park: lagoon tours leave with a handful of trucks instead of dozens, and the trade wind blows July to December, which is why kitesurfers base here. There is almost no mobile signal, no ATM, and the streets are soft sand. Come for 3 nights, book a pousada that sends a pickup, and bring cash.

- Do not walk from the Port of Atins to your pousada with bags — arrange the pickup in advance.
- The river beach has strong currents and, from August to December, wind-chopped water; it is not a swimming beach.
- Groceries are limited and expensive; buy water and food in Barreirinhas before the last leg.
- Kitesurfing inside the national park lagoons is restricted to one lagoon; fines and park rules apply.
Atins is a small, low-crime village; the real risks are heat and sun on the dunes, strong river currents, no mobile signal, no ATM, and getting stranded at the port without a pre-arranged pickup.
