Athlone sits almost dead-centre of Ireland, where the Shannon cuts the town in two. It is a rail and bus junction on the Dublin–Galway line, so it works as a single-night break or a lunch stop rather than a destination in itself. The castle, the river and one very old pub are the draw; the lakeshore at Coosan Point is the reason to stay longer.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk: castle to the east-bank shops is about 10 minutes over the bridge. Bus Éireann A1 and A2 cross town every 15 min Mon–Sat and every 30 min on Sundays, linking Monksland, the bus and rail stations, the centre, Golden Island and TUS. Taxi ranks sit at the train station and on Church St. The town is long and thin, so check which stop you want before boarding.
