Where to stay in Athens: best neighborhoods and hotels

Uptown Athens is the right base for a short first visit: you park once and walk to Court Street restaurants, Ohio University and the bars. If you are driving in for a football weekend or a Hocking Hills trip, the Ohio 33/Ohio 682 strip east of town gives you free parking and lower rates for a 5–10 minute drive.

The decision changes on dates, not on taste. On move-in, parents' weekend, home football games and graduation, uptown rooms sell out months ahead and prices jump; on an ordinary midweek in spring or fall, you can decide a week out.

Four areas cover almost every trip. Distances are approximate road or walking distances within Athens; treat drive times as estimates.

Uptown is compact: Court Street and the blocks around it hold most of the restaurants, cafés and bars, and the Ohio University campus sits just south. A room here means you can leave the car and walk everywhere for a night or two. The trade-off is price, noise on weekend nights and parking that is metered or paid. Ask about parking before you book, because not every uptown property has its own lot.

The Ohio 33/Ohio 682 strip east of town is the practical choice for drivers. Chain hotels with free parking sit along the highway, and you reach uptown in 5–10 minutes. This is where to look on a football weekend when uptown is full, and it is the easier base if you are combining Athens with Hocking Hills or Nelsonville.

Rooms close to campus suit move-in, parents' weekend and graduation, but those are exactly the dates when everything books out. If your trip is built around a university event, book as early as you can and expect event pricing.

The Plains and Nelsonville are small towns 15–25 minutes away with cheaper rooms and quick access to the Hocking Hills area. They work if you have a car and are spending most of your time outdoors rather than in Athens itself.

Expect US$110–180 for a mid-range room in 2026, and US$200 or more on event weekends. Budget motels on the highway start lower; uptown boutique-style rooms sit at the top of the range. Rates are quoted before tax, and Ohio adds lodging tax on top, so the final bill is higher than the headline number.

Parking is the hidden cost uptown: metered street parking or a paid garage, versus free lots on the highway strip. If you are staying two nights and driving, the strip often works out cheaper overall.
