Athabasca
Stop for one night on the Highway 2 run between Edmonton and Fort McMurray; a half-day covers the riverfront, the walking tour and the Landing Trail.
Athabasca is a town of about 3,000 on the Athabasca River, 145 km north of Edmonton at the junction of Highway 2 and Highway 55. It predates the railway: the Edmonton–Athabasca Landing trail was the fur-trade portage between two river systems, one draining to the Arctic and one to Hudson Bay. Today it is the service centre for the region and home to Athabasca University, and it works as a one-night break on the drive north rather than a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are long and services thin north of town: fill the tank in Athabasca before heading to Wandering River or Fort McMurray.
- Winter driving on Highway 2 and Highway 55 means ice, drifting snow and moose on the shoulder after dark.
- Summer brings mosquitoes and horseflies near the river and on the Muskeg Creek trails: repellent is not optional.
- Cell coverage drops on the back roads east of town; download offline maps before the Landing Trail section.
Low crime, small-town risk profile. The real hazards are the drive (ice, moose, long empty stretches), winter cold, and summer insects on the trails.
