Ath
Give Ath one day, not a night: the walled centre is 1 km across and done in 3–4 h; sleep in Brussels, Mons or Tournai.
Ath is a French-speaking town of about 29,000 in western Hainaut, roughly midway between Brussels and Lille. Its core sits inside a ring of rivers and the Blaton-Ath canal, so the whole historic centre is walkable in a couple of hours. The draw is the late-August Ducasse, a giant parade with medieval roots, plus a Burbant tower, a Baroque town hall and a Gallo-Roman boat museum. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop on the Brussels–Mons–Tournai rail line.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; one cheek kiss among friends (three in some places); avoid: Overfamiliarity with strangers
- Language: English or the local language; avoid: French in Flanders, or Dutch in Wallonia, as a default
- Punctuality: Be on time; avoid: Late arrivals for dinner reservations
- Conversation: Food, beer, football and cycling; avoid: Flemish-Walloon politics unless invited
Scams and watch-outs
- Parking in the centre is paid and checked: buy the ticket, don't guess.
- The Ducasse draws big crowds in late August; book beds and trains early.
- Many small museums and churches keep limited, seasonal hours: check before you travel.
- The town is quiet on Sundays and public holidays; food options thin out.
A calm small town; the real risks are traffic on the N56 through the centre, slippery canal and river banks after rain, and pickpockets only in the Ducasse crush. Emergency 112.
