Behramkale

Give Assos one night, two at most: the Temple of Athena and the old harbour are a half-day, and the village empties after the day buses leave.

Assos is the tourist name for Behramkale, a stone village on a crag above the Aegean with a 530 BC Temple of Athena on top and a small Ottoman harbour 2 km below. It is a stop, not a base: one night covers the temple, the walls and the port, and the beach strip at Kadırga 3 km east is where you swim. Come May–June or September–October; July–August is hot and crowded with day traffic.

Get around

The village and the port are 2 km apart on a narrow, steep lane, about 20 min on foot; an occasional dolmuş runs between them. Inter-city buses stay on the D-550 inland, so you change at Ayvacık (hourly, about 15 min to the village) or Küçükkuyu (less frequent, up to an hour). A car makes Kadırga and Babakale easy; without one you are on dolmuş timetables.

  • Greeting: Handshake; 'Merhaba' (hello) or 'Selamün aleyküm' in conservative areas; cheek kisses between friends of the same sex; avoid: Offering a hand to a conservative woman first — wait for hers

Scams and watch-outs

  • Do not confuse Ayvacık (the transfer point) with Ayvalık, about 100 km south towards İzmir.
  • Cliff falls above the old port have closed access at times; check locally before planning a harbour walk.
  • Wild camping on the coast is a bad idea: the coastguard reads it as a crossing attempt to Lesvos.
  • Some pansiyons and restaurants close out of season; confirm before a winter trip.
  • The lane to the port is steep and cobbled: not for large vehicles or heavy bags.

Assos is a small, low-crime village and the usual risks are practical: the steep cobbled lane to the port, unlit roads at night, and cliff-fall closures near the harbour. The sea is clean; swim at Kadırga rather than off the rocks.
