Asmara is a compact highland capital at about 2,300 m: two easy days on foot along Harnet Avenue and the modernist streets, with a visa and any travel permits arranged before you fly and all your cash brought with you.
Asmara is flat in the middle, cool at night and easy to walk. The trips that go wrong are the unprepared ones: no visa arranged, no cash (foreign cards and ATMs generally do not work), a camera pointed at a military or government site, or a first afternoon spent walking hard at altitude. Four small clusters cover the centre; anything beyond the city needs a travel permit and a car through your hotel or agent.

- Churches and the mosque: Cover shoulders and knees; shoes off at the mosque; keep quiet during services.
- Photography: Never photograph military, government buildings, bridges or infrastructure; ask before photographing people.
- Greetings: A handshake is standard; take time with greetings rather than rushing straight to business.
- Coffee ceremony: Stay for at least two of the three rounds if invited or seated for one; leaving after the first is considered abrupt.

Scams and watch-outs
