Ashtabula is a small Lake Erie harbor town of about 19,000 people, roughly an hour from both Cleveland and Erie, Pennsylvania. A car makes the county reachable; without one you are limited to the harbor and Walnut Beach.

Get around
Drive. The town is about 7 square miles and the harbor, beach and interstate hotels are spread out; there is no useful local bus. Taxis exist but are thin — book ahead for an early departure. The Western Reserve Greenway Trail is a paved 43-mile rail-trail with a trailhead in Ashtabula and another at Austinburg, good for bikes and walking.
